BookWrites and BookBuds

Our BookWrites and BookBuds lists are the carefully selected books and other writings which we base our teaching sequences on.

There are a great many wonderful texts out there to share with children. However, we put a great deal of thought into the ones we choose to write teaching sequences for to ensure they offer all of the following:

  • something worth discussing;
  • rich language to explore;
  • national curriculum age-related structures (text and grammatical) that can be replicated to inspire pupils' original compositions.

Each teaching sequence is based around a core text, and follows a three part structure: Learning About the Text, Practising Writing and Independent Writing.

To hear from some of our chosen authors, visit our Meet the Authors page. Here, several of our favourites talk to us, and you, about their writing!

Download our BookWrites lists, which we regularly update and add to, and visit our Publications page to find out more, including how to purchase our teaching sequences via our shop.

BookWrites is an innovative support package containing teaching sequences for planning in English.

The teaching sequences follow a three-part plan: Learning about the text, practising writing and independent writing. Each sequence is based on quality children's literature and has reading activities and grammar taught in context included.  There are over 200 sequences, all of which are available in Word format, so that teachers can make their own adaptations to suit their class. These sequences are a core element in raising standards in writing. See further information about teaching sequences here and the texts we have written the sequences around.

Assessment of Writing is an innovative set of resources providing support and guidance to help teachers make accurate, evidence-based assessments of writing across KS1 and KS2 and establish appropriate expectations for each year group. These are used by schools to support teachers who are moving year groups, to raise and set expectations and to support standardisation, assessment and moderation procedures in school.  There are examples of writing from Y1 to Y6 all of which have been assessed using our Evidence Gathering Sheets and statutory criteria for Y2 and Y6. The writing has been annotated, much like an exemplification file, to show how the judgements have been made. Much of the writing is outcomes from the teaching sequences so it is also used to show what can be expected from the planning.

We offer a range of training to support the use of these resources.

The sequences in our BookWrites subscription can also be purchased as individual teaching sequences via the shop.

Exciting news…our first plans specially written for Reception classes are here!

BookBuds are text-based plans enabling consistency in approach for BookWrites schools all the way from YR to Y6. The plans have been written to match the EY curriculum through collaboration between our team and two of our EY/KS1 Ambassador Subject Leaders, as well as support from one of our Early Years Advisors.
