Talk Boost programmes (initial and refresher) using resources from Speech and Language UK

Schools need to have purchased the resources direct from Speech and Language UK.

Early Talk Boost

This one-day programme is a targeted intervention aimed at 3-4 year old children who need help with talking and understanding words, helping to boost their language skills to narrow the gap between them and their peers. The programme aims to accelerate children’s progress in language and communication by an average of 6 months, after a nine-week intervention.

Talk Boost KS1

Talk boost KS1 (one day) is a targeted intervention for 4-7 year old children that need help with talking and understanding words, including children in reception classes. The programme is delivered in primary schools by classroom teachers and teaching assistants and provides a structured programme that boosts children’s progress in language and communication by an average of 9 - 18 months after a ten-week intervention.

Talk for Work

Talk for work (formerly called Talk about Talk Secondary) is an evidenced targeted intervention that helps students aged 14 to 18 with difficulties in talking and understanding words to be ready for the workplace. It can be used in both secondary schools and further education colleges.   The programme consists of a series of 13 fully planned one-hour lessons delivered by trained teaching or support staff.   Students who are selected to take part in the intervention will learn and practise the communication skills that support other ‘soft’ employability skills such as team working, time management and problem-solving.

Preparing for your 2024-25 reception class from a communication and interaction perspective (90 mins)

Transition from preschool into the reception class can be an exciting time for children. However, those with C&I needs may find this time more challenging and will benefit from enhanced universal support to have a successful start at school. This briefing will provide primary school SENDCOs and reception class teachers with a range of strategies to support children with identified SLCN, as well as those whose needs may not yet have been formally identified.

Training objectives:

  • Develop an understanding of how SLCN can present in the reception classroom
  • Learn a range of strategies that support understanding, talk and interaction within the reception classroom.
  • Learn about a range of strategies to support children with identified SLCN, as well as those whose needs may not yet have been formally identified

Sessions will run centrally in the summer term.
