Good practice for speech, language and communication (primary settings)

This four part course will offer primary colleagues an opportunity to develop their understanding of SLCN in order to ensure robust systems for identification are in place.

Training objectives

The full day course will cover 4 modules:

  1. Understanding SLCN and DLD - an explanation of the different areas within speech, language and communication needs (SLCN), its prevalence and potential impact on learning, emotional wellbeing and life outcomes.
  2. Typical development and identification - focus on supporting schools to identify when language and communication skills are not following typical development patterns and the key indicators all teachers should be aware of.
  3. Supporting understanding - explore the different components of ‘understanding’ alongside practical strategies to support pupil’s receptive language in every lesson.
  4. Supporting talk - the importance of pupil talk and practical strategies to support expressive language across the school day.
