10:00 Co-producing a space where all children can play - Wendy Russell, Independent researcher and Senior Research Fellow at University of Gloucestershire
Playwork Principle 5 says that the role of the playworker is to support all children and young people in the creation of a space in which they can play. Starting with the idea that space is always in the process of being produced, this session will explore practical ways of reflecting on how your space works. Expect mapping, a few moments of nonsense and a gentle challenge to our dearly held definition of play as freely chosen and personally directed.

This transformative keynote explores exactly what happens in children’s brains when they play and demonstrates that an understanding of how the brain works enables us to support our children to experience the most amazing play opportunities.
The keynote then explores the vital role of Play in developing and growing children’s brains, highlighting the profound importance of play for brain growth, wellbeing and even life expectancy. Ben Kingston-Hughes makes a compelling argument that play is a fundamental building block for every aspect of well-being and development.
