Beach and water safety for schools

This course provides school staff with training to operate on beaches and at the water margins to provide curriculum and enrichment activities for pupils.  

The course comprises of a 1.5hr introductory online training session, a 1 day practical session at a coastal location and finally a short post-course assessment paper.

  • Session 1: Introductory online session
  • Session 2: Practical session

Course content:

  • The benefits of using beaches and water courses for education
  • The hazards, risks and effective risk management
  • Group safety during activities such as sea paddling, rock pooling, river studies/dipping 
  • Practical strategies for supervision
  • Dealing with emergencies

Candidates will be deemed competent and receive certification from the LA following attendance at both sessions and on completion of a short post-course assessments paper.

This course ensures competence in the following areas:

  • Understand how to plan for a school visit to a beach or water course
  • Understand risk management for the above
  • Understand how to deal with typical emergencies in these environments
