Five years ago, we reported on our research project which explored supporting learners to be active and influential participants in mathematics lessons through the use of pre-teaching and assigning competence. Since then, pre-teaching has been referenced in national resources by NCETM. This package explores putting findings from the research into action. During the school visit focus children are chosen, a pre- teach session is collaboratively planned for that day’s maths lesson, the teacher conducts the pre-teach and the adviser observes the focus children in the main maths lesson. After the lesson the impact of the pre-teach is reviewed and next steps agreed. A few weeks later the teacher/s and adviser meet online to further review the impact on the focus children and collaboratively plan another pre-teach session.
