How I came to be working at The Dartmoor Centres

After a change of career from financial services I started working at The Dartmoor Centres in March 2000.  Since then I have had many roles within outdoor education; Centre Manager at the Start Bay Centre, Outdoor Leadership Training Manager, Project Manager for a Govt. funded project for young people, Outdoor Education Tutor in a Pupil Referral Unit, Centre Manager at the Dartmoor Centres and currently Head of Outdoor Learning for Devon County Council, which includes Head of Centres and Outdoor Education Adviser.

My favourite thing about Dartmoor

Solitude, big skies, watching the landscape change as the light and weather changes, low sun on a winter afternoon allowing Bronze Age field systems to ‘appear’ on distant hills. Long runs into the heart of the north moor in winter can be challenging but invigorating.  Things scurrying under your feet as you tramp through the long grass, basking lizards in summer, hungry weasels in winter.

What makes me happy

Being in natural places, and soaking it all up, whether it is watching vultures soar over the jagged peaks of the Pyrenees, otter spotting on the endless empty beaches of the Outer Hebrides, or a quick Friday night getaway wild camping on Dartmoor.  All of which are best enjoyed with family and friends and dogs.
