Action Learning Sets 2025

These Multi-Agency Action Learning Sets are suitable for anyone working or volunteering with children, young people and families.  Each learning set aims to improve collaborative skills, co-production and understanding in safeguarding context to support your work as a practitioner. These areas have been identified in audits and reviews as opportunities for growth and development.

  • Understand what constitutes a purposeful contact or visit whether routine or compliance-based
  • Identify how purposeful visits contribute to safeguarding, early intervention and improved outcomes for children, families, and vulnerable adults
  • Learn how to use a structured approach to plan, carryout and reflect on contacts and visits, with clear objectives and outcomes
  • Understand how it’s important to communicate, coordinate and share information with other agencies before, during, and after a visit to ensure a holistic approach
  • Understand the importance of identifying and responding to signs of risk or need

  • Understand the principles of risk analysis, particularly in a multi-agency context, and the importance of a shared understanding across agencies
  • Identify key indicators of risk and protective factors
  • Learn the importance of applying structured risk assessment approaches using tools or frameworks
  • Understand how to ask the right questions, challenge assumptions and avoid confirmation bias when assessing risk

  • Understand the purpose and principles of multi-agency planning, and the importance of clarifying roles and responsibilities across Agencies
  • Learn the importance of collaborative plans which are child-focussed and responsive to assessed needs, using planning tools and frameworks effectively
  • Be confident in promoting the voice of the child and the family in planning

  • Understand the concept of “voice of the child” and what it means to hear, value and act on the views, wishes and feelings of children
  • Appreciate how listening to children contributes to safeguarding, planning, and promoting positive outcomes
  • Explore common challenges such as age, communicate needs, trauma and power dynamics
  • Learn how to embed the child’s perspectives in documentation, decision-making and reviews, ensuring their voice influences outcomes
  • Understand how different agencies can support and reinforce each other in listening to and acting on what children say

  • Understand the principles of effective partnership working
  • Recognise the challenges and benefits of multi-agency collaboration and learn how joint working improves outcomes
  • Explore effective use of communication which is clear, respectful and timely in order to share information, escalate concerns and coordinate interventions
  • Learn the importance of shared decision-making and planning approaches

Recording

26 September

21 November

  • Understand the purpose of effective recording, and how this supports safeguarding, continuity of care, accountability and reflective practice
  • Learn what makes a record clear, concise, factual, analytical, and child-centred
  • Explore the differences between fact, opinion and analysis
  • Increase confidence in including the views, wishes and experiences of children and families in records
  • Understand legal, ethical and organisational requirements and the importance of sharing records in the multi-agency arena

What do I need to know about these Action Learning Sets? 

  • They are delivered on-line by our commissioned training provider, Dialogue
  • You will need to attend the on-line session in full to receive a certificate – sessions are not recorded.
  • A cancellation or non-attendance fee may be charged (see Terms and Conditions below).

Who are they for?

  • These sessions are for staff and volunteers at all levels who work with children, young people, families, and parents or carers.
  • You might also be involved in assessing, planning, intervening, and reviewing the needs of the child and parenting capacity when there are concerns.
  • Also suitable for Designated Safeguarding Officers and Deputies.


What do these sessions cost? 

  • These sessions are fully-funded for Partners including Health (NHS), Education and Early Years, Children Services and Probation.
  • Other organisations may have to pay.

Cancellations and Non-Attendance - Terms & Conditions

Cancellations - you or your organisation will be charged if we don't receive you cancellation at least 4 weeks before the training date or tell us about someone who will attend in your place.  

Non-attendance - if you don't turn up or arrive late/leave early, we reserve the right to charge you or your organisation.

What will I be charged? - £65 per person

Extenuating Circumstances - you will not be charged if there are circumstances beyond your control which have had an impact on your ability to attend a course. Generally, they will be circumstances of a medical or personal nature that are out of your control, and which could not be prevented.  They must have had a significant impact on your ability to attend, for example, significant illness, bereavement, having to attend court, being a victim of crime or another acute trauma.  It is important to remember that only the most serious extenuating circumstances will be considered.
