Six years ago, we reported on our research project which explored supporting learners to be active and influential participants in mathematics lessons through pre-teaching and assigning competence. The impact on learners in Y6 was significant, including an impact on their status in the maths classroom, their belief in themselves as learners of mathematics and their KS2 test results. Since then, pre-teaching has been referenced widely, including in national resources by NCETM. This programme will explore putting findings from the research into action with learners at the top end of KS2.
Participating teachers will:
Please note that schools and participators must be able to commit to the full programme. All dates are identified before the start of the programme and we ask that these are protected and any issues communicated before the first session. If a participant does not turn up for a session it will be assumed that they have withdrawn from the programme, unless there has been advance notification. Participants should also be supported by their school leadership to explore outcomes from the project with other colleagues in their school.
The programme includes:
During the school visits, a pre-teach session will be collaboratively planned, linked to that day’s maths lesson, the teacher will lead the pre-teach and the adviser will then observe the focus learners in the main maths lesson. After the lesson, the impact of the pre-teach will be reviewed and next steps agreed.
