Carnegie Medals for Writing and Illustration 2026

We held three wonderful Carnegie events this year and each shadowing group championed their favourite book from the shortlist with creativity and enthusiasm, making for lively and memorable mornings.

The events celebrating the Carnegie Medal for Writing were held at The Kingsley School in Bideford and St Peter’s C of E School in Exeter. Our guest speaker Luke Palmer, author of the Carnegie-shortlisted book Play, enthused and inspired the audiences with his talk about the influences on his writing and his journey into authorship.

Pupils voted for the most inspiring presentation at each event. Bideford College impressed the audience at Kingsley School with their highly entertaining take on Popcorn, while Colyton Grammar School triumphed at St Peter’s with their dramatic retelling of The Boy I Love.

Our celebration event for the Carnegie Illustration Award included eight outstanding contributions featuring poetry, artwork and thoughtfully constructed arguments. The shadowing groups voted The Paper Bridge by Joelle Veyrenc as their overall favourite, admired for its delicate and intricate kirigami paper-cut illustrations by Seng Soun Ratanavanh.
