Carnegie Medals for Writing and Illustration 2026

The Carnegie Medals for Writing and Illustration are the UK’s longest-running and best-loved children’s book awards, recognising outstanding reading experiences created through writing and illustration in books for children and young people. carnegies.co.uk

Each year, the Devon School Library Service holds three Carnegie events in celebration of the Awards: two secondary events focused on the Carnegie Medal for Writing, and one primary event celebrating the Carnegie Medal for Illustration.

The secondary events feature a talk by a guest author and are hosted by different schools across Devon each year. The primary event takes place at Pathfield Special School in Barnstaple.

Schools from across Devon attend with their Carnegie shadowing groups, who share their responses to the shortlisted books in creative and engaging ways, reflecting the spirit of the Carnegie Shadowing Scheme and creating an inspiring and enjoyable morning for all involved.

I attended the Carnegie Medal for Illustration Celebration Event today and just wanted to say thank you for putting on such an event. To see such a diversity of schools presenting and socialising together was wonderful and truly supports the ‘levelling up’ that is so much needed within our education system. I was supporting Caen as a parent but am the former HT at West Croft School in Bideford and my passion is ensuring that all children regardless of background or starting points have the same opportunities and events such as this beautifully demonstrate that desire.
