New to SENCo

This training package will support SENCos who are just starting out in the role or are new to the role in Devon. It will provide an overview of the both the strategic and operational aspects of being a SENCo and how these can practically be applied to your setting. The course will supplement the knowledge, skills and practice of those undertaking or awaiting to undertake the SEND NPQ and is designed to run as a precursor or alongside this qualification.

The programme involves of combination of face to face and online sessions, as well as 3 individual mentoring sessions over the year. You will have the opportunity to build a supportive network amongst colleagues from other settings and services, ask questions and share good practice.

You will have ongoing support from the SEND advisory team, through mentoring sessions, to discuss any questions or challenges and problem solve together, ensuring you are well-equipped to carry out the role.

Session 1 – full day in person (Autumn)

Session 2 – 2 hour online session (Spring)

Session 3 – 2 hour online session (Spring)

Session 4 – full day in person (Summer)

Training objectives

This course will support SENCos to:

  • Develop an understanding of the strategic and operational aspects of the SENCo role and what these look like in practice.
  • Manage their time and workload effectively 
  • Fully understand the legal duties placed on schools relating to SEND: what that looks like in policy and practice.
  • Understand what a Graduated Response is, what this looks like in practice and how to ensure everyone knows their role in the process.
  • Understand the Devon context and raise awareness of local systems, processes and key services
  • Feel equipped with knowledge, understanding, tools and resources to carry out their role effectively.
  • Work collaboratively with pupils, parents/carers and staff to improve outcomes for CYP.
  • Build supportive network with others in similar roles.
