John Townsend

Having been a secondary school teacher for many years and a writer in residence in a primary school treehouse, John became a full-time writer of children’s books: from picture books, plays and poetry to reading schemes, novels and information books. He has published well over 300 titles and has visited hundreds of schools and libraries around the UK – now sticking to Devon!

For the last 12 years John has been one of the children’s writers visiting schools across North Devon as part of the ever-popular Appledore Book Festival’s Schools Week – where they say: ‘If John hasn’t visited your school, you have missed a real treat! His events are designed to hook in ‘reluctant readers’ (although not exclusively) and include foul facts, cheesy jokes, adventure fiction, spooky tales, mysteries and all things animals to prove how reading is cool, scary and mindboggling.’

John had been involved with many literacy projects to engage all abilities with the delights of books. Specialist non-fiction subjects include science, environment and wildlife. John was delighted to recommend Dawlish College Library for the Society of Authors Reading for Pleasure Award – a well-deserved certificate signed by Sir Phillip Pullman. Another plus for Devon!
