National Wraparound Childcare programme

The National Wraparound Childcare programme started from September 2024.

Wraparound childcare is before and after school care for primary school aged children in England during term time, such as regular afterschool provision that runs until at least 5.30pm or later.

The childcare should be available every school day outside of regular school hours and is aimed at helping parents access more childcare, and to work or attend training for the hours they want to.

Wraparound Childcare should start no later than 8.00am and finish no earlier than 5.30pm, five days a week during term time. It is aimed at children from Reception to Year 6.

Wraparound childcare: Everything you need to know about before and after school childcare

Many schools already offer enrichment and extra-curricular activities before and after the school day, but these do not meet the definition of wraparound childcare. The principal aim of the programme is to ensure childcare provision is regular and dependable for working parents. Enrichment activities can interact with, complement, or support delivery of wraparound childcare provision. Play should be the main focus of wraparound clubs where children can socialise and enjoy time with their friends in a safe and nurtured environment, where nutritious food and snacks are an integral part of the sessions.

Early Adopters Breakfast clubs are being piloted across England since April 2025, Free breakfast clubs mean no child starts school hungry and will help set children up for the day by providing a nutritious breakfast as well as time with friends to enjoy activities such as reading and crafts. Attend our Out of school play and childcare conference on 26 September 2025 at Exeter Racecourse, a must for all staff and managers working within the sector. The event will be promoting all aspects of out of school childcare provision and covering the importance of play and the positive impact it can have on children’s development, mental health, the economic importance of having reliable and dependable childcare to enable parents to work or train and much more.
