Devon School Library Service inspires young readers at Devon County Show
Devon School Library Service (SLS) was delighted to attend this year’s Devon County Show, engaging with families and children to promote a love of ‘reading for pleasure’.
Positioned within the Devon County Council stand, the SLS team created a welcoming and interactive space where children could explore books, share stories and discover the joy of reading.
A highlight of the event was the opportunity for every child who visited the stand to take home a book of their own. Over the course of the show, an incredible 720 ex library stock books were given away, helping to place stories directly into the hands of young readers.
Visitors also enjoyed a range of activities designed to promote reading and creativity. A particular highlight was the popular Elmer activity, where children could take part in colourful, creative fun inspired by the much-loved story.
Mandy Davison, Head of Devon School Library Service, said:
“The Devon County Show is a fantastic opportunity to connect with families and share our passion for reading. Seeing children choose a book of their own and leave excited to start reading it was so rewarding. By giving out these free books, we hope to inspire a lifelong love of reading and give children access to great stories.”
The Devon County Show provided a valuable opportunity to celebrate reading, engage with the wider community and highlight the importance of supporting young readers across Devon.
Devon School Library Service looks forward to continuing to work with schools to inspire a love of reading and ensure every child has access to high-quality books.
