Hybrid PD programme which will run across two half days face to face (in four venues across Devon), one online surgery and one online follow up.
Evidence from recent executive function research projects indicates that learners from 7 to 17 can fail to reason when faced with problems involving calculation and algebraic relationships, especially in test situations, and instead rely on default strategies which can be both inefficient and ineffective.
This programme will explore how to support learners in Y6 to use what they know and what they notice in order to reason when solving problems and answering questions in maths. Questions from KS2 maths papers will be used to illustrate fluency through reasoning. Approaches will be appropriate for use with the whole class and participating teachers will be asked to select three focus learners (under-resourced where possible) for particular attention as part of the programme.
Please note that schools and participators must be able to commit to the full programme. All dates are identified before the start of the programme and we ask that these are protected and any issues communicated before the first session. If a participant does not turn up for a session it will be assumed that they have withdrawn from the programme, unless there has been advance notification. Participants should also be supported by their school leadership to explore outcomes from the project with other colleagues in their school.
