High-quality teaching and learning in secondary RE (in-person)

This course will update secondary subject leaders and teachers on current issues and approaches in RE. It will explore different KS3 curriculum patterns and introduce teachers to the new Oak Academy resources. We will be exploring the use of disciplinary characters to develop Ways of Knowing and identify a number of different approaches and practical strategies to improve the delivery of RE at KS3 and 4.

Training objectives

Course objectives:

  • explore KS3 curriculum patterns for RE including the new Oak Academy resources
  • introduce the new Understanding Muslims, Understanding Islam resource from RE Today
  • develop Ways of Knowing through use of disciplinary characters, enabling students to ‘think like a philosopher/theologian/social scientist’.
  • understand some of the critical responses to a religion and worldviews approach
  • outline strategies for non-exam RE at KS4
  • identify which non-religious worldviews are suitable to teach about
  • show how controversial issues can be used for development of personal knowledge 
  • show how to deepen theological understanding through holocaust art
