As schools develop and implement their Climate Action Plans and wider sustainability strategies, access to additional resource and capacity can make a real difference. The University of Exeter’s award-winning Green Consultants programme connects schools with trained student interns who can support sustainability projects and help turn plans into action.
Schools can host a Green Consultant to work on a range of projects, including carbon reduction initiatives, biodiversity enhancement, waste and resource management, travel planning, sustainability audits, climate education activities, and stakeholder engagement. Students bring fresh perspectives, enthusiasm, and up-to-date sustainability knowledge while gaining valuable professional experience.
Green Consultants are University of Exeter students who have completed specialist sustainability training covering environmental knowledge, project management, communication, and employability skills. These students have also undertaken a team-based sustainability project, gaining hands-on experience of delivering real environmental initiatives at the university.
Funding may be available for up to 35 hours of support, helping schools access additional capacity at minimal cost. Internships can be completed on-site or remotely. Students are available on a part-time, full-time, or vacation basis, with flexibility around academic commitments.
The programme offers a practical, affordable way for schools to accelerate progress towards their sustainability goals while supporting the development of future environmental professionals.
